wod-o for the doggos

Oh happy Monday. We’re all back at it this morning, unless you have the pleasure of being on vacation (ah jealous). This weekend was a great weekend, and not just because the weather was fantastic.

This weekend I spearheaded a fundraiser for Last Hope K-9 at my CrossFit gym, CrossFit One Nation. The idea was you buy a ticket for $15, 100% of that goes towards the dogs, and you get an amazing workout in. For weeks I worked with people to promote the heck out of this.

The day arrived, and I was super excited. I really enjoy organizing events; everything from the physical set-up to the pre-planning, so I was ready. I got there nice and early to set-up: snacks, raffles, a giant dog balloon. We had it all!

The WOD (work out of the day), appropriately named “Zoomies” was:
As many rounds as possible in 20 minutes with a partner of:
100-foot shuttle sprint
10 wall-ball shots, 20/14
100-foot shuttle sprint
10 box jump overs, 24/20
One partner works at a time. Alternate complete rounds with your partner.

I really appreciated how Sam and Erika made this “dog themed” (running, jumping, throwing a ball – perfect). And it was the type of workout that was perfectly scale-able for the people that were new to the gym, as well as challenging for current members.

10AM arrived and we successfully checked in about 40 people (a mix of fitness enthusiasts, dog lovers, and the spouses that were dragged along for the ride aka my husband), and we were ready to get this started. Sam and Erika, the coaches, took us through a fun warm-up, walked us through the movements and then the workout itself. I’m impressed with their ability to wrangle a bunch of unruly people (myself included in this bucket). I think they did a fine job of making everyone, especially the new people, feel welcome and comfortable.

Before we know it, it’s time, and that clock starts to countdown. 3, 2, 1 and we’re off. Per usual I start off fast, too fast, and that pace begins to slow. I look at the clock and we’re only 5 mins in “what, how is that possible?!” but we keep chugging along. I know this sounds corny, but I’m so proud of Richard, he’s really giving it his all and he’s doing amazing for his first class. 10 mins pass and I’m very grateful we’re halfway there – it’s SO hot in here. Not in a good “Hot in Herre” like the Nelly song. I mean like I need AC or a pool now type of way. What seems like a lifetime goes by, and we’re finally there, the last minute. It’s my turn and I try to get in my last box jumps, I make it to 8 as the clock hits 20. We collapse to the ground and catch our breath, laying in a pool of sweat (hey look at that, got my pool after all). High fives all around, we made it!

After class, we all gather. We have some great conversations with people interested in the rescue, and we give out some prizes. We end up raising over $900! I couldn’t have been prouder of my gym to come together for me and the puppies. I couldn’t be prouder of all my friends, and family for coming out to even just try CrossFit. And for those that helped bake, promote, and donate – you’re so AMAZING. This was a true team effort.

These people are the reason I had a great weekend.
